What faba beans are

Faba beans (Vicia faba), also called fava, field or broad beans, are the dry seeds of a cool-season legume. They typically contain about 25–30% protein on a dry basis, with starch and fibre making up most of the rest. Seed size ranges widely, from small, rounded field beans to large, flat broad beans. Faba beans contain the natural compounds vicine and convicine and, in coloured-flower varieties, tannins in the seed coat; low-tannin and low-vicine varieties are grown where these matter for food or feed.

Types of faba beans

Small-seeded (field beans)
Smaller, rounded beans of Vicia faba var. minor and equina types. Widely used for food in Egypt and the Middle East and for compound feed.
Large-seeded (broad beans)
Large, flat seeds of the var. major type, used mainly for food, including dehulled and split product.
Food grade
Clean, sound beans of uniform size and colour for whole cooking, canning, dehulling and flour milling.
Feed grade
Beans used in rations for pigs, poultry, ruminants and fish as a home-grown protein source.

Main uses and markets

In Egypt, Sudan and across the Middle East, faba beans are a staple food: they are slowly cooked whole for ful medames and ground for falafel. Dehulled beans are milled into flour and processed into protein concentrates. In Europe a large share of the crop is used in animal feed. Major producing and exporting countries include Australia, the United Kingdom, France, Canada and the Baltic states, while China is both a large producer and consumer.

Packaging and logistics

Faba beans are shipped in bulk vessels, in containers, in big bags or in 25–50 kg bags, by sea, rail or multimodal routes. Food-grade lots usually move in bags or containers, feed-grade lots in bulk.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between faba beans and broad beans?

Both are Vicia faba. In trade, "faba" or "field beans" usually refers to the smaller-seeded types, while "broad beans" refers to large, flat-seeded types used mainly for food.

Are faba beans suitable for animal feed?

Yes. They are a protein and energy source for pigs, poultry, ruminants and fish. Low-tannin varieties are often preferred for monogastric animals.

Which HS code applies to faba beans?

Dried, shelled broad beans and horse beans (Vicia faba) are classified under HS 0713 50. The final classification of a lot is confirmed by the customs declarant.
