What sorghum is

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) is one of the world’s major cereals. It tolerates heat and drought better than maize and is grown widely in the Americas, Africa, Asia and Australia. The grain is rich in starch, and its feeding value is close to that of maize. Major exporters include the United States, Australia and Argentina.

Tannin and grain types

Low-tannin sorghum
White, yellow and most red sorghums without a pigmented testa. Preferred for poultry and pig feed and for most food uses, as protein and starch digestibility is high.
High-tannin sorghum
Brown sorghum with a pigmented testa layer. Condensed tannins bind protein and reduce digestibility, so feed buyers usually specify a maximum tannin level.

Main uses and markets

  • Animal feed. Sorghum replaces part or all of the maize in compound feed for poultry, pigs and cattle; it is often ground or steam-flaked to improve starch use.
  • Food. Whole and milled sorghum is used for flour, flatbreads, porridge and couscous, and is naturally gluten-free.
  • Processing. Sorghum is a raw material for brewing, distilling and fuel ethanol production.

East Asia is a major import destination for feed sorghum; Africa, the Middle East and Asia buy sorghum for food and feed.

Packaging and logistics

Sorghum is shipped in bulk in vessel holds or containers, in big bags or in bags, by sea, rail or multimodal routes. Moisture control and fumigation where required by the destination help preserve quality during long voyages.

Frequently asked questions

Can sorghum replace maize in feed?

Low-tannin sorghum has an energy value close to maize and can replace a large share of it in poultry, pig and cattle rations. It contains little pigment, so poultry feed may need added pigments for yolk and skin colour.

Why does tannin content matter?

Condensed tannins in brown sorghum bind proteins and digestive enzymes, which lowers feed efficiency. Feed and food buyers therefore usually require low-tannin grain.

Which HS code applies to sorghum?

Grain sorghum is classified under HS heading 1007; grain other than seed for sowing falls under 1007 90. The final classification of a lot is confirmed by the customs declarant.
