CAN Supplier — Calcium Ammonium Nitrate 27% N

Calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) is a granular nitrogen fertiliser that combines ammonium nitrate with finely ground limestone or dolomite. FUSHKOV GCG supplies CAN to agricultural buyers and distributors internationally on Incoterms 2020 terms, subject to the regulations of the destination country.

What CAN is

CAN is produced by mixing an ammonium nitrate melt with calcium carbonate (limestone) or dolomite and granulating the mixture. The most widely traded grade contains 27% nitrogen, split roughly equally between the nitrate form, which is available to plants immediately, and the ammonium form, which acts over a longer period. The carbonate filler adds calcium, and in dolomite-based grades also magnesium, and makes the product practically neutral in its effect on soil pH. Major producing and exporting regions include Europe and Russia.

Grades with a different nitrogen level or with added magnesium or sulphur are also produced; the exact composition is fixed in the contract.

Use in agriculture

CAN is applied mainly as a top-dressing for winter and spring cereals, grassland, maize, oilseed rape, sugar beet, vegetables and fruit. The nitrate share gives a quick response, while the ammonium share sustains supply. Because it does not acidify the soil to the same extent as ammonium-based fertilisers and loses little nitrogen to volatilisation, CAN is often preferred on acidic soils and for surface application. Compared with Ammonium nitrate, the lower nitrogen content and the carbonate filler make CAN less hazardous to store and handle; specific requirements depend on the country of destination.

Packaging and logistics

CAN is shipped in bulk, in big bags or in 50 kg bags, by sea, rail or multimodal routes. The product is hygroscopic, so dry, covered storage and intact packaging are essential to prevent caking.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between CAN and ammonium nitrate?

CAN is ammonium nitrate diluted with limestone or dolomite. It contains less nitrogen (typically 27% against 34.4%), adds calcium and is generally easier to store, handle and transport.

Does CAN acidify the soil?

Its acidifying effect is largely offset by the carbonate filler, so CAN is close to neutral and is often chosen for acidic soils.

Which HS code applies to CAN?

Mixtures of ammonium nitrate with calcium carbonate or other inorganic non-fertilising substances are classified under HS 3102 40. The final classification of a lot is confirmed by the customs declarant.
