What UAN is
Urea ammonium nitrate solution is a clear liquid obtained by mixing urea and ammonium nitrate solutions with water. About half of the nitrogen is in the urea form, a quarter in the ammonium form and a quarter in the nitrate form. This combination gives both a fast and a sustained nitrogen supply. A corrosion inhibitor is usually added to protect carbon-steel tanks and equipment. Major exporting countries include Russia and Trinidad and Tobago, along with several European producers.

Use in agriculture
UAN is applied with sprayers, through fertigation systems or by injection into the soil. Liquid application allows accurate dosing and even distribution, and UAN can be combined with some crop protection products and with other liquid nutrients such as sulphur solutions. It is used on cereals, maize, oilseeds, sugar beet, potatoes and vegetables, both before sowing and as a top-dressing.
Packaging and logistics
UAN is shipped only as a liquid in bulk: by sea in product or chemical tankers, and over land in rail and road tank cars, with storage in terminal tanks. Seasonal timing is important because demand is concentrated before and during the application period, and cold-climate destinations usually require a lower-concentration grade.
