What ammonia is

Ammonia, NH3, is produced by the Haber–Bosch process from nitrogen and hydrogen. It is a gas at ambient conditions and is traded as a liquid, either refrigerated to about −33 °C at near-atmospheric pressure or pressurised at ambient temperature. With about 82% nitrogen, anhydrous ammonia is the most concentrated nitrogen product. Major exporting countries include Trinidad and Tobago, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Algeria and Indonesia.

Main uses

Fertiliser production
Feedstock for Urea 46% N, Ammonium nitrate, ammonium phosphates and Ammonium sulphate.
Industry
Production of nitric acid and other chemicals, refrigeration and flue gas treatment.

Direct application

In some regions anhydrous ammonia is injected directly into the soil as a nitrogen fertiliser using specialised equipment. This requires trained operators and dedicated storage and is regulated by national rules; most traded ammonia is processed into solid or liquid fertilisers such as UAN solution.

Packaging and logistics

Large volumes move by sea in fully refrigerated or semi-refrigerated gas carriers between import and export terminals with refrigerated storage. Smaller volumes travel pressurised in rail tank cars, road tankers and ISO tank containers. Ammonia is toxic and corrosive, and every shipment follows the applicable dangerous goods rules; loading and discharge terminals must be suitable for the product.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between refrigerated and pressurised ammonia?

Both are liquid ammonia. Refrigerated ammonia is kept at about −33 °C at low pressure and is used for large sea cargoes; pressurised ammonia is stored at ambient temperature under pressure for smaller volumes.

Who buys ammonia?

Mainly producers of nitrogen and phosphate fertilisers, chemical plants and industrial users, as well as distributors of anhydrous ammonia for direct application.

Which HS code applies to ammonia?

Anhydrous ammonia is classified under HS 2814 10; ammonia in aqueous solution falls under 2814 20. The final classification of a lot is confirmed by the customs declarant.
