What palm olein and stearin are
Palm oil is semi-solid at room temperature. Fractionation — controlled cooling and crystallisation followed by filtration — separates it into liquid palm olein and solid palm stearin. Fractions are traded as RBD (refined, bleached and deodorised) products. Indonesia and Malaysia are the leading producers and exporters.

Main uses and markets
RBD palm olein is used as cooking and frying oil in households, restaurants and the snack and instant noodle industries, valued for its stability at high temperatures. Palm stearin goes into margarine, shortenings, vanaspati and bakery fats, and into soaps and oleochemicals. Major import markets include South Asia, Africa, the Middle East and China.
Packaging and logistics
Palm olein and stearin are shipped in bulk in tankers or in flexitanks in containers, by sea or multimodal routes. Stearin and, in cold weather, olein are heated before discharge.
