Elemental sulphur is the key raw material for sulphuric acid, which in turn is used to process phosphate rock into phosphate fertilisers. FUSHKOV GCG supplies granular and lump sulphur to fertiliser and chemical producers internationally on Incoterms 2020 terms.
Most of the world’s elemental sulphur is recovered during the processing of sour natural gas and the refining of crude oil, where hydrogen sulphide is converted into sulphur. The recovered molten sulphur is then formed into granules or allowed to solidify into lumps for shipment. Major exporters include countries of the Middle East, Kazakhstan, Russia and Canada.

The largest use of sulphur is the production of sulphuric acid, most of which goes into phosphate fertilisers such as DAP, MAP and single and triple superphosphate. Sulphuric acid is also used in metal leaching and the chemical industry. In agriculture, elemental sulphur is applied as a slow-acting sulphur fertiliser, often in bentonite-bound or fertiliser-blended form, and to lower the pH of alkaline soils.
Sulphur is shipped mainly in bulk, and also in big bags, by sea, rail or multimodal routes. It is a combustible solid and is classified as dangerous goods for transport; cargo is kept dry and protected from ignition sources, and dust is controlled during loading and discharge.
Mostly from natural gas processing and oil refining, where sulphur is removed from the hydrocarbon stream and recovered in elemental form.
Granules generate less dust, flow well during loading and discharge and are less prone to breakage than lump sulphur.
Sulphur of all kinds, other than sublimed, precipitated and colloidal sulphur, is classified under HS 2503. The final classification of a lot is confirmed by the customs declarant.
