What beet pulp is

In a beet sugar factory, sliced beet (cossettes) is washed with hot water to extract the sugar. The exhausted cossettes are pressed, dried and usually pelleted. The result is a feed rich in highly digestible fibre, mainly pectins, hemicellulose and cellulose, which rumen microbes ferment efficiently, so its energy value for cattle is close to that of cereals. Supply comes from the major beet sugar producers, including the European Union, Russia, Ukraine, Egypt and the United States.

Types of beet pulp pellets

Unmolassed beet pulp pellets
Plain dried pulp. Lower in sugar, high in digestible fibre; often preferred for horses and where a low-sugar ingredient is required.
Molassed beet pulp pellets
Pulp with beet molasses added back before drying. Higher sugar content and palatability, typically used in dairy and beef rations.

Main uses and markets

  • Dairy and beef cattle. Beet pulp supplies digestible fibre and energy and can replace part of the cereal grain in rations, supporting stable rumen fermentation.
  • Sheep and goats. A palatable fibre and energy source in compound feed and total mixed rations.
  • Horses. Unmolassed pulp, usually soaked before feeding, is a popular source of slow-release energy.

Importing regions include the Middle East, North Africa, Europe and East Asia, where beet pulp is used by feed mills and large dairy farms.

Packaging and logistics

Beet pulp pellets are shipped in bulk in vessel holds or containers, in big bags or in bags, by sea, rail or multimodal routes. Pellet hardness and fines content matter for handling, and moisture is controlled to prevent heating and mould during transit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between molassed and unmolassed beet pulp?

Molassed pulp has beet molasses added back before drying, which raises sugar content and palatability. Unmolassed pulp contains little sugar and is often chosen for horses and low-sugar rations.

Is beet pulp an energy or a fibre feed?

Both. Its fibre is highly digestible, so for ruminants it provides energy close to that of cereals while being less likely to cause rapid rumen acidification.

Which HS code applies to beet pulp pellets?

Beet pulp, bagasse and other waste of sugar manufacture are classified under HS 2303 20. The final classification of a lot is confirmed by the customs declarant.
