SSP Supplier — Single Superphosphate with Sulphur
Single superphosphate (SSP) is the oldest commercial mineral fertiliser and supplies phosphorus together with sulphur and calcium. FUSHKOV GCG supplies powder and granular SSP to agricultural buyers and blenders internationally on Incoterms 2020 terms.
What SSP is
SSP is made by reacting ground phosphate rock with Sulphuric acid. The result is a mixture of monocalcium phosphate and calcium sulphate (gypsum). Typical grades contain about 16–20% phosphorus expressed as P2O5, around 11–12% sulphur in the sulphate form and a significant amount of calcium. Because production is simple and does not require phosphoric acid, SSP is made in many countries close to agricultural markets.
Powder and granular SSP
Typical specification (reference)
| Parameter | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Total P2O5 | about 16–20%, by grade |
| Water-soluble P2O5 | As specified in the contract |
| Sulphur (S) | about 11–12% |
| Calcium | Present as monocalcium phosphate and gypsum |
| Granule size (granular) | 1–4 mm or as specified |
| HS code | 3103 19 (less than 35% P2O5) |
Reference values for typical commercial grades. The final specification is fixed in the contract; the final classification of a lot is confirmed by the customs declarant.
Use in agriculture
SSP is valued wherever crops need sulphur as well as phosphorus: oilseeds such as rapeseed and groundnuts, legumes, pastures, sugar cane and many vegetables. It is applied before sowing or at planting and is also used in blends. The gypsum content supplies calcium and can improve the structure of some soils.
SSP or TSP?
TSP 0-46-0 delivers more than twice as much phosphorus per tonne and is more economical where only phosphorus is required, especially over long freight distances. SSP is preferred when sulphur and calcium are also needed.
Packaging and logistics
SSP is shipped in bulk, in big bags or in 50 kg bags, by sea, rail or multimodal routes. Because of its lower nutrient concentration, it is most often traded regionally.
Why FUSHKOV GCG
Frequently asked questions
Why does SSP contain sulphur?
Sulphuric acid used in production reacts with the calcium in phosphate rock to form calcium sulphate, which remains in the product and supplies plant-available sulphur.
What does "single" mean?
It distinguishes SSP, made with sulphuric acid, from triple superphosphate, made with phosphoric acid and containing much more phosphorus.
Which HS code applies to SSP?
Superphosphates containing less than 35% P2O5 by weight are classified under HS 3103 19. The final classification of a lot is confirmed by the customs declarant.
