Palm Kernel Expeller (PKE) Supplier — Palm Kernel Cake
Palm kernel expeller, or PKE, is the cake left after oil is mechanically pressed from palm kernels, and a widely traded energy and fibre feed for ruminants. FUSHKOV GCG supplies PKE to feed manufacturers and dairy and beef producers worldwide on Incoterms 2020 terms.
What PKE is
The oil palm fruit yields two oils: palm oil from the fleshy mesocarp and palm kernel oil from the kernel inside the nut. When kernels are crushed in screw presses, the remaining cake is palm kernel expeller. It contains moderate protein, a meaningful residual oil content and a high share of fibre, and it is valued as a cost-effective energy feed for cattle. Indonesia and Malaysia are by far the largest producers and exporters.
PKE and PKM
Typical specification (reference)
| Parameter | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Moisture, max | Typically 10–12% |
| Crude protein | Typically 14–18% |
| Crude fat (oil) | Typically 7–11% for PKE |
| Crude fibre | Typically 15–20% |
| Shell content | As agreed in the contract |
| Aflatoxin | Within the limits of the destination country |
| HS code | 2306 60 (oilcake of palm nuts or kernels) |
Reference values for typical commercial grades. The final specification is fixed in the contract; the final classification of a lot is confirmed by the customs declarant.
Main uses and markets
- Dairy cattle. PKE is used as a supplementary feed in pasture-based and housed dairy systems, providing energy and fibre.
- Beef cattle, sheep and goats. A palatable ingredient in compound feed and rations.
- Compound feed. Feed mills use PKE at moderate inclusion; high fibre and shell content limit its use for pigs and poultry.
Importing regions include Oceania, Europe, East Asia and the Middle East.
Packaging and logistics
PKE is shipped in bulk in vessel holds or containers, in big bags or in bags, by sea, rail or multimodal routes. Because of its residual oil content, moisture and temperature are monitored to limit self-heating and rancidity during the voyage.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between PKE and PKM?
PKE comes from mechanical pressing and keeps more residual oil, while PKM is solvent-extracted and has less oil. PKE therefore provides more energy per tonne.
Why is shell content specified?
Fragments of the hard palm nut shell add indigestible fibre and reduce feed value. Buyers usually set a maximum shell content in the contract.
Which HS code applies to PKE?
Oilcake and other solid residues of palm nuts or kernels are classified under HS 2306 60. The final classification of a lot is confirmed by the customs declarant.
